When the gate dropped to start the 12th round of the 2009 AMA Supercross Series inside the Edward James Dome in St. Louis, Missouri, Josh Grant of the JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha team who reacted the quickest, earning the holeshot and leading the first two laps of the 20-lap main event before Chad Reed raced past at the start of lap three. A lap later Stewart was around Grant, and then, by Reed and in the lead, hoping to race away to his ninth win of the 17-race series. The two remained close together, Reed just 0.772 seconds behind on lap five. As the laps clicked off, Stewart found a rhythm and began to separate himself from the 2008 champion. Then it all went wrong for rider #7. on lap number 15, Stewart’s San Manuel Yamaha YZ450F hit a false neutral just before launching off the big step up jump, Stewart and machine nose diving into the face of the following jump. Reed, taking advantage of the situation, flashed by and went on to win is third race of the 2009 season, the 55,880 fans on hand thrilled with his determination and tenacity. Stewart would get back on his feet and get going again, finishing second, and 4.468 seconds behind Reed. Third place went to a hard riding Josh Grant. Fourth was Honda rider Andrew Short, Short crossing the finish line a mere 1.733 seconds ahead of AMPM Boost Mobil Yamaha’s Jason Lawrence. Ivan Tedesco (Honda/No Fear), Mike Alessi (Suzuki) and Davi Millsaps (Honda) rounded out the top eight. (more…)
