‘The California Kid’ to Test His Fastball from the Mound of the 2008 California League Champion Ports

Las Vegas, NV (USA) –World Extreme Cagefighting® featherweight star Urijah Faber will throw out the first pitch at the Stockton Ports game against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Friday, May 8 at 7:05PM PST. Faber, a native of nearby Sacramento, will be also on hand to meet Ports players and watch the reigning California League champions take on the Quakes. A special fireworks presentation will follow the game. The Ports are the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.

Gearing up for his epic rematch with WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento on June 7, Faber is excited to take a break from training camp and test his pitching skills.

“I’m excited to throw out the first pitch at the Ports game,” Faber, who boasts a professional record of 22-2 and is considered one of the most dominant 145-pound fighters of all-time, said. “They are a championship team and I’m looking to get my belt back, so it’s only fitting that I take the mound there.”

In addition to the featherweight title bout between champion Mike Brown (21-4) and Sacramento’s Urijah Faber (22-2), nine other bouts round out a stacked card in California.

Before Brown and Faber lock horns in one of the most anticipated fights in WEC history, featherweight contenders Jose Aldo and Cub Swanson do battle in a bout that may very well determine the next in line for a title shot. Undefeated in the WEC at 4-0 with four knockout victories, the Brazilian Aldo (14-1) has cemented himself as a rising star in the 145-pound division. In his last fight in March, the 22-year-old scored a menacing first-round stoppage victory over Chris Mickle. He’ll put his winning streak on the line against gifted ground expert Swanson. A winner of three out of his last four bouts, Swanson (13-2) is a gritty performer with a knack for submissions. No stranger to fighting through adversity, Swanson waged war with Hiroyuki Takaya in his last bout in December and earned an impressive, unanimous decision victory. The 25-year-old Californian will look to get one step closer to the featherweight title with a win over Aldo. (more…)
